Recovery is not a solo journey. It’s a path best walked with support, understanding, and connection. As the Recovery Housing Peer Advocate with THRIVE, I have the privilege of walking alongside individuals in recovery, offering guidance, support, and hope as they rebuild their lives one day at a time.
My job is rooted in lived experience. Like the individuals I support, I’ve faced the challenges of addiction and know the courage it takes to seek a better life. This shared experience is at the heart of what makes peer advocacy powerful. I’m not just someone with professional training—I’m someone who truly understands what it means to fight for recovery.
At its core, my role is about fostering connection. I work primarily with residents in Recovery housing, creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals can feel heard, understood, and valued. One-on-one coaching sessions allow me to help an individual set and accomplish both short- and long-term goals or simply listening when they need someone to talk to. Other times, it means assisting with practical matters like building a resume, connecting with local resources, or skill building. Recovery is about more than staying abstinent—it’s about building a meaningful, independent life. I do my best to support every aspect of that process.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing transformation unfold. I’ve witnessed individuals come into THRIVE feeling lost, broken, or unsure of themselves, only to rediscover their strength, purpose, and hope with time and support. It’s not always a straight line, and setbacks happen, but watching people learn to believe in themselves again is nothing short of inspiring.
As the Recovery Housing Peer Advocate, I also serve as a bridge—connecting residents with the broader recovery community and helping them find their place within it. Whether that’s introducing them to support groups, helping them get involved in volunteer work, or encouraging participation in holistic workshops at THRIVE, I aim to show that recovery isn’t just about avoiding substances—it’s about creating a life worth living.
This work isn’t always easy. There are days when the challenges feel heavy, when I worry about someone’s progress, or when I wish I could do more. But even on the toughest days, I’m reminded why this work matters. Every small victory—a job interview, a reunited family connection, a milestone in recovery—is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
