Rebirth of a Season

The weather is warming and spring is finally upon us. As April begins, I’m reminded of the old rhyme: “April showers bring May flowers.” A little rain hardly hurts now with the promise of the beauty to come.

This time of year always reminds me of coming out into my recovery. Out of the downpours and into the sun. The cold behind me and now I can live in the warmth of my sun. My sun, my inner light, my hope for myself that I felt was hidden in the clouds for too long. But the sun can break through the clouds. The sun can shatter the thick coverage and send a beam of light right through and onto the face of the Earth.

May is coming. The flowers and the sunshine, the warmth of the summer grows. It is my recovery brightening each day.

I feel reborn every spring. I feel recommitted to my recovery and my dedication to singing my song. I sing for the person I used to be who felt voiceless. I sing for the people lost through the years to addiction who can no longer speak. I sing out to bring on the spring and grow with each new year, bathed in the sun and hope of my recovery.
