Recovery Looks Good In July 6.29.26

July is often associated with freedom.

There are fireworks, backyard barbecues, beach days, concerts, vacations, and long evenings spent with family and friends. While our country celebrates Independence Day, July also offers us an opportunity to reflect on another kind of freedom, the freedom that recovery can bring.

Recovery isn’t just about giving something up. It’s about getting so much back.

It’s the freedom to wake up without regret. The freedom to rebuild relationships. The freedom to laugh until your stomach hurts. The freedom to chase dreams you once believed were impossible. And perhaps most importantly, the freedom to simply be yourself.

Every July, I’m reminded that recovery has opened the door to experiences I never imagined I’d appreciate so deeply. Here are ten simple ways to celebrate your own freedom in recovery this month.

1. Have a Beach Day Without an Agenda

Pack a towel, a good book, some snacks, and leave the pressure behind. Whether it’s Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Smith Point, or a quiet North Shore beach, let yourself enjoy doing absolutely nothing for a few hours.

2. Watch Fireworks Through New Eyes

Fireworks hit differently in recovery.

Instead of worrying about what comes next, you can simply enjoy the moment. Stand with friends, family, or fellow members of your recovery community and appreciate the simple joy of sharing an experience you’ll actually remember.

3. Become a Tourist on Long Island

How often do we overlook the incredible places right in our own backyard?

Spend a day exploring Greenport, Port Jefferson, Northport, Huntington Village, Patchogue, or one of Long Island’s beautiful parks and preserves. Recovery invites us to rediscover the world around us.

4. Say “Yes” to Something New

Take a yoga class.

Rent a kayak.

Try paddleboarding.

Visit a farmers market.

Go to an outdoor concert.

The comfort zone gets larger every time we choose curiosity over fear.

5. Host a Sober Summer Cookout

Invite friends, family, neighbors, or members of your recovery community over for burgers, music, lawn games, and laughter.

The best gatherings aren’t defined by what’s in the cooler, they’re defined by who’s around the table.

6. Make a Summer Bucket List

Write down five things you’d like to do before Labor Day.

Nothing extravagant.

Maybe it’s watching five sunsets, reading a great book, visiting a lighthouse, attending a THRIVE event, or trying every local ice cream shop you can find.

Recovery reminds us that goals don’t always have to be life-changing; they can simply be life-giving.

7. Give Back

Summer is filled with opportunities to volunteer, support community events, mentor someone newer in recovery, or simply lend a helping hand.

One of the greatest freedoms recovery offers is the ability to use our experiences to make someone else’s journey a little easier.

8. Put the Phone Away

For one afternoon, disconnect.

Take a walk.

Listen to the waves.

Watch the clouds.

Have an uninterrupted conversation.

Some of the best moments in recovery happen when we’re fully present instead of fully connected to our devices.

9. Celebrate Every Milestone

Whether you’ve been in recovery for one week, one month, one year, or twenty years, your progress deserves recognition.

Every day is evidence that hope works.

Don’t wait for a “big” anniversary to celebrate how far you’ve come.

10. Remember What Freedom Really Means

Freedom isn’t perfection.

Freedom isn’t the absence of challenges.

Freedom is knowing that today you have choices.

Recovery allows us to respond instead of react, to build instead of break down, and to create a life that reflects who we truly want to be.

That’s worth celebrating every single day.

A Final Thought

This July, while fireworks light up the sky and families gather to celebrate, take a moment to recognize your own journey.

Recovery is one of the greatest acts of courage a person can undertake. Every healthy decision, every honest conversation, every day you choose growth over giving up is its own celebration of freedom.

From all of us at THRIVE, we hope your July is filled with sunshine, connection, laughter, and the kind of freedom that comes from living authentically.

Happy July, and happy recovery!
