Summer in Recovery: 10 Experiences That Help Me Feel Alive, Connected, and Free

Summer In Recovery 5.28.26

There is something incredibly special about summer in recovery, especially here on Long Island.

For many of us, the summer months once carried a different meaning. Long days, parties, isolation, unhealthy routines, or simply trying to escape ourselves. Recovery changed that for me. Today, summer represents freedom in an entirely new way, freedom to be present, freedom to experience joy authentically, and freedom to build meaningful memories that I can actually remember and cherish!

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is rediscovering life through clear eyes. The little things become meaningful again: sunsets, conversations, music, laughter, nature, movement, community, and moments of peace. Summer gives us countless opportunities to reconnect with ourselves and others in healthy, fulfilling ways.

Recovery is not about avoiding life, it’s about fully living it.

Here are 10 summer experiences that have helped me flourish in recovery and continue strengthening my wellness journey.

  1. Watching a Sunrise at the Beach

There is something grounding about catching an early sunrise on Long Island. Whether it’s Robert Moses, Smith Point, Jones Beach, Sunken Meadow, or a quiet shoreline on the North Fork, those peaceful morning moments can be incredibly healing.

In recovery, I’ve learned that peace often exists in the quiet moments we used to rush past. Sitting by the ocean with coffee, music, or simply your thoughts can become a powerful reminder of how far you’ve come.

  1. Exploring Long Island’s Beaches, Bays, and Waterfront Towns

Living on Long Island gives us access to some of the most beautiful waterfront spaces anywhere. Spending time near the water, walking a boardwalk, visiting Port Jefferson, Greenport, Patchogue, or simply sitting by the bay, can help us slow down and reconnect with ourselves.

Recovery taught me how important it is to create healthy experiences that calm the mind instead of escaping from it.

  1. Attending Sober Events and Community Gatherings

One of the biggest misconceptions about recovery is that life becomes boring. The truth is the opposite.

Recovery introduced me to authentic connection. Summer concerts, BBQs, recovery events, game nights, outdoor movie nights, and community celebrations all feel different when you’re fully present for them. THRIVE has plenty of them, but also look at your local coffee shops, yoga studios, places of worship, and community centers for additional great options!

Some of my favorite summer memories now come from sober spaces filled with laughter, support, and genuine friendships.

  1. Taking a Walk Through Nature on Long Island

Long Island has incredible parks, trails, and outdoor spaces that can be therapeutic for recovery. Places like Belmont Lake State Park, Caumsett State Historic Park, Avalon Preserve, the Massapequa Preserve, and the Quogue Wildlife Refuge offer opportunities to breathe, reflect, and reset.

Sometimes healing looks as simple as putting your phone away, walking beneath the trees, and allowing yourself to be present.

  1. Trying Something New This Summer

Recovery is about growth, and Long Island offers endless opportunities to explore new experiences. Take the ferry to Fire Island, try paddleboarding on the South Shore, visit a farmers market on the East End, see live music in a local village, go fishing, kayak through the marshes, or attend a community wellness event.

One of the greatest gifts of recovery is rediscovering curiosity. We are allowed to experience life in ways that feel healthy, exciting, and meaningful.

  1. Building Healthy Routines While Enjoying Flexibility

Summer schedules can become chaotic, which makes maintaining recovery routines even more important.

For me, flourishing in recovery means balancing spontaneity with structure, staying connected to support systems, maintaining self-care, attending meetings or peer groups, getting rest, and checking in with myself emotionally.

The healthiest summers are the ones where we protect our peace while still embracing joy.

  1. Connecting with Healthy People and Recovery Community

Summer on Long Island brings so many opportunities for connection, recovery events, local concerts, community nights, wellness activities, BBQs, and beach gatherings. Some of my favorite memories in recovery have come from simple moments spent laughing with people who genuinely support my growth.

Healing happens in community, and no one should have to navigate recovery alone.

  1. Volunteering or Giving Back

One of the most fulfilling parts of recovery is realizing that our experiences can help others.

Volunteering at community events, supporting peers, participating in outreach, or simply showing kindness to someone struggling can create purpose and strengthen recovery.

Service reminds us that our story matters.

  1. Making Summer Memories You’ll Actually Remember

There is something special about driving down Ocean Parkway with the windows down, grabbing food with friends after the beach, watching fireworks by the water, or spending a summer evening walking through a local town knowing you are fully present for it all.

One of the greatest gifts recovery has given me is the ability to create genuine memories instead of blurred moments. That feeling of clarity, connection, and gratitude is something I never take for granted anymore.

  1. Allowing Yourself to Feel Joy Again

This may be the most important one.

Sometimes people in recovery struggle with believing they deserve happiness. But healing includes joy. It includes laughter, peace, excitement, connection, and hope.

Summer reminds me that recovery is not simply surviving, it is learning how to live fully again.

There is no perfect recovery journey, and there is no perfect summer. Some days are easier than others. But every healthy choice, every connection, every moment of peace, and every experience we allow ourselves to enjoy matters.

Recovery gave me my life back. Summer gives me an opportunity each year to appreciate just how beautiful that life can become.

At FCA’s THRIVE Recovery Centers, we believe recovery should be filled with purpose, connection, wellness, and joy. This summer, give yourself permission to experience all of it.

You deserve it!
